Can you explain what a hernia is?

Alicia Snider, MD: A hernia is a bulge that occurs, most commonly in the abdomen or groin area, when an organ or tissue pushes through an opening or weakness in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue that contains it. If you have a hernia, you will likely notice a bulge that becomes more pronounced when you cough, lift something heavy, or stand for long periods of time.

How common are hernias, and what are some common risk factors?

Alicia Snider, MD: Hernias are very common and affect millions of people each year. While anyone can develop one, certain factors increase the risk, including being overweight, having a family history, being pregnant, or having conditions like chronic coughing or constipation that put strain on the abdominal area.

Can hernias be painful? And what happens if it goes untreated?

Alicia Snider, MD: Hernias are not always painful. In fact, some people don’t experience any pain or discomfort, especially in the early stages.
If left untreated, serious complications can arise. The bulging tissue can become trapped, which might cut off its blood supply and cause a life-threatening condition called strangulation. This can lead to severe pain, tissue damage, and the need for surgery. This is why it’s so important to be proactive and get it examined by a health care professional immediately.

How does Chelsea Hospital approach hernia treatment?

Alicia Snider, MD: We specialize in hernia repair using advanced surgical techniques. One of the most exciting developments in hernia surgery is the use of minimally invasive, robotic-assisted surgery. This allows us to make smaller, more precise incisions, resulting in less pain, reduced scarring, a reduced risk of post-surgery complications, and a faster recovery compared to a traditional surgery.
Our goal is to help patients return to their normal life as quickly and as comfortably as possible, and minimally invasive techniques helps us reach that goal.
