Residency Program in Grand Rapids

Welcome from the Program Director

We want you to be a competent physician who is prepared for your future. Our mission at Trinity Health Grand Rapids/Michigan State University Internal Medicine Residency Program is to train physicians who are clinically competent to practice primary care, hospital medicine or pursue subspecialty training.

We have been training residents in Internal Medicine for over 60 years. The faculty provides excellent academic training in a collegial atmosphere. Our graduates will have the knowledge and personal attributes to excel in patient care.

Resident growth and independence are promoted with supervision by core faculty. Our core faculty has a passion for medical education and an average of 15+ years of teaching experience.

Rotations are designed to offer residents an opportunity to match their own career goals. Rotations are primarily at Trinity Health Grand Rapids Hospital, with rotations in Inpatient Cardiology at Corewell Health.

Trinity Health Grand Rapids serves a region of over 1 million people, and has a core of over 120 primary care physicians, to provide the patient base for teaching and patient care. The hospital serves a diverse patient population. Through our affiliation with the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, there are opportunities to teach medical students on every inpatient service.

Grand Rapids is the second largest city in Michigan with a diverse economic base. Grand Rapids is safe, affordable and vibrant with many opportunities to experience the arts, sports and cultural events.

We are excited that you are interested in our program, so please continue reading to learn more of why you should train here!

James Passinault, MD
Internal Medicine Program Director

Welcome to the Trinity Health Grand Rapids Internal Medicine Residency Program!

We’re so excited to have you join us and can’t wait to help you grow further as a physician. You’ve worked hard to get here and now we’re here to help you along your journey to become a full-fledged internal medicine physician.

One of our program’s most valued aspects is the incredible sense of community. Our faculty are not only outstanding educators, and also are approachable and affable mentors here to help you navigate and develop your clinical acumen and future career. Furthermore, everyone in our hospital system, from our graduate medical administrators - to our nurses - to our clinic support staff, is friendly and willing to help out to ensure your time here and patient-care is run smoothly and safely.

Throughout your residency, you’ll care for a diverse patient population from all walks of life in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, allowing you to build the skills and confidence necessary to become an autonomous internal medicine physician. We are deeply committed to fostering a supportive, inclusive environment that values the contributions and unique perspectives of every individual.

Our X+Y schedule gives our residents the ability to focus on caring for patients in the hospital during your inpatient blocks, and to follow patients in the continuity clinic only during your outpatient blocks. This model not only enhances your learning experience, but also helps to prevent burnout. Additionally, there is no cross-coverage during your intern year, so while on outpatient blocks, you’ll have your entire weekend free to recharge and explore the city.

Grand Rapids is a wonderful place to live and explore. Whether you’re an outdoorsy person who enjoys hiking, biking, or kayaking or someone who enjoys delving into the city’s vibrant arts and food scene, there’s something here for everyone. With its welcoming community and great quality of life, Grand Rapids is the perfect backdrop for your residency journey.

We’re thrilled to welcome you into our residency family. If you ever have questions, need support, or simply want to connect, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or any member of our team. We're here for you every step of the way.

Your chief,

Warda Shoaib, MD

Program Overview

  • Our hospital has state of the art facilities and is a referral hospital for multiple affiliated hospitals. In addition to the hospital’s large primary care base, we have a significant commitment to the underserved and support clinics that serve the homeless, Spanish speaking community, underserved and those infected with the HIV.
  • Our Program Director, Bryan Hull, MD, has over 20 years of residency administration experience and is supported by faculty with a commitment to resident education and wellness.
  • Our residency has hospitalists and intensivists in the hospital 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to support the education of our residents. This faculty availability allows resident independence with physician oversight to promote education instead of service.
  • Our program size offers the opportunity for camaraderie with faculty and staff.  We are all committed to our residents’ success!
  • Our curriculum is flexible, allowing residents to focus on a path in ambulatory care, hospital medicine or subspecialty medicine.

Program Highlights

  • Our core faculty practices both inpatient and outpatient medicine, and are uniquely able to teach residents in both settings as well as model transition medicine.
  • Our faculty is committed to developing a long term teaching relationship with each resident.
  • We are committed to your well-being, so no shift is scheduled more than 13 hours, and duty hours are carefully monitored.
  • Our inpatient services are adjusted to meet the educational need of each learner, with hospitalist faculty available to care for any additional patients.
  • Our community medicine elective teaches cultural and racial health care disparities with the opportunity to provide care for the underserved patient populations in the community.
  • Residents are able to choose a hospital committee to help guide our hospital in quality and safety initiatives.
  • We emphasize caring for the patient as a whole, with services including acupuncture, massage therapy and music therapy available for inpatients and outpatients.

    • “They make you feel welcome and be part of the team, and truly give you the chance to grow as a physician and adapt clinical acumen”
    • “The attendings and residents encouraged independence, but were always available for questions and concerns. The senior residents in particular did an amazing job facilitating the transition from med school to intern year…it is thanks to them that I had such an amazing experience this month”
    • “There was a diverse array of patient pathology and there was excellent teaching from the attending”
    • “Great experience. Enjoyed feeling autonomous”
