The innovative APP Neurology Fellowship is comprised of a comprehensive 12 month post-graduate program designed to fully equip a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to provide excellent neurological care through clinical education, didactic review, and self-improvement.
The program accepts one NP or PA per cycle. The academic calendar begins May of each year. The 12 month curriculum is designed to allow the fellow to learn in two-to-four-week blocks in a variety of clinical areas, including:
- Neurology “boot camp”
- Neuro-hospitalist
- Neuro-critical care
- General Neurology
- Pediatric Neurology
- Epilepsy
- Vascular Neurology
- Neuro-interventional
- Neuromuscular
- Movement Disorders
- Neurosurgery
- Neuroimmunology
- Sleep Medicine

- Neuro-palliative
The program also offers dedicated didactics, continuity clinic, neuroradiology case conferences, grand rounds, journal club, MMI, and research opportunities.
Upon completion, fellows will be awarded a Trinity Health certificate documenting completion of the post-graduate fellowship. Such certification will make graduates more competitive in the job market as high functional neurology APPs.
Rationale for a Neurology APP Fellowship
Gaps in Neurological Care
- There is a shortage of Neurology providers to care for people with neurological disease in our communities
- APPs (NPs and PAs) have been proven to be cost-effective and provide high quality medical care, when integrated into a system with physicians
- Most APP new graduates have never done a Neurology elective, only 7% of the PA certification exam is allocated to Neurology, and most APP Neuro exam didactics are not taught by neuroscientists
- The neuroscience job market can be competitive for applicants who do not already have experience in the field
A Proven Solution
- In 2022, Neurology Education published an editorial calling for post-graduate Neurology training for NPs and PAs
- In 2024, Neurology Education published an assessment of 10 years of experience with a 1-year neurology APP fellowship, demonstrating positive outcomes patients, graduate APPs, and supervising neurologists
