Feminine hygiene is a topic often surrounded by misconceptions and misinformation, yet it plays a vital role in every woman's overall health and well-being. Understanding how to properly care for your body can prevent discomfort, infections and unnecessary concerns. Whether you’re navigating puberty, pregnancy or menopause, adopting simple, healthy hygiene practices can help you feel confident in your daily routine.
What are the most common mistakes women make when it comes to vaginal hygiene?
One of the most common mistakes is overcomplicating vaginal hygiene. Hygiene of the female genitalia generally is very simple. “This is an area of the body that is self-regulated and has a natural pH balance that doesn't need to be controlled by much. We recommend avoiding any scented or perfumed products at all to the area. This area can be cleansed with only warm water,” said Dr. Jessica Gibbie, Trinity Health Medical Group, Obstetrics & Gynecology.
What signs or symptoms should women watch out for that indicate a problem with vaginal hygiene?
There are certain signs that can point to an issue and may require an office visit. “If there is any itching, irritation, soreness, redness or foul odor, you should seek care in case there is an infection of some sort,” said Dr. Gibbie. Bleeding happening outside of your regular menstrual cycle—whether it’s after intercourse, during menopause or for multiple cycles—should also prompt a visit to your health care provider.
Does menopause require changes in vaginal hygiene routines?
Menopause doesn’t mean making changes to daily care, but vaginal dryness is a common issue many women face due to reduced estrogen levels. If your dryness becomes symptomatic, your gynecologist can help with treatment options to alleviate discomfort.
Cups, discs, tampons, pads and more! What products are best?
“Really, there’s no right answer for this, it depends on the person and their level of comfort with each product,” said Dr. Kelin Prokurat, Trinity Health IHA Medical Group, Obstetrics & Gynecology - Bloomfield, “Cups and discs may have to be removed more often with heavier flows, but women may be fine with that if that’s what they prefer.”
Organic vs. regular tampons and pads, is there a difference?
“I don’t necessarily think organic is a must, I would definitely recommend unscented over scented.” Said Dr. Prokurat,
What are causes of body odor in women?
Body odor in women can vary depending on several factors, including activity level and hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle. “Any persistent odor that is foul from the female genitalia with symptoms such as itching or irritation may warrant further evaluation,” said Dr. Gibbie.
What myths about feminine hygiene would you like to dispel?
One of the most pervasive myths Dr. Gibbie wants to clear up is the idea that vaginal discharge is abnormal: “Discharge is normal to have and can vary in color and consistency throughout the menstrual cycle based on hormonal change. It is okay to have discharge!”
It is important to understand what is normal, and what isn’t, when it comes to your body and taking care of it every day. If you are experiencing symptoms that aren’t normal for you, it may be time to visit your provider.
