For nearly 100 years, Trinity Health Livingston has served as a vital community resource and trusted provider for healing body, mind and spirit. Today, we are building a new hospital at our Brighton campus for you, your loved and all those we serve. This important project is an investment of approximately $238 million into Livingston County to elevate the patient experience, clinical excellence and health and well-being of our community.

As a non-profit health system, we are relying on our community to join us with philanthropic support for the Forging our Future Campaign. Your generosity will build on a heritage of giving that makes a difference every day – giving for areas like our Warren R. and Lauraine A. Hoensheid Cancer Center; Surgical, Breast Health, and Imaging Services; ER; and Community Health and Well-being Programs.

We are grateful for your ongoing commitment to our mission and excited to join together again for this important endeavor. If you are interested in learning more about how your giving can support the health and vibrancy of our community, please contact:

Project Overview

We are pleased to share an opening date of April 19, 2026. This is the date current inpatients will move to the new hospital, but there will be moving of equipment and staff for several weeks before and after this date.

We are moving to a new location to offer even better care with a new space, newer technology and a safer, more modern environment. Our goal is to keep the community healthy for years to come.

We are excited to offer new and expanded medical services in Livingston County, inside a new, 174,000 square-foot, 56 bed replacement hospital. The new hospital and renovated medical center campus will include 18 existing Short Stay Unit beds, 8 licensed operating rooms, intensive cardiac rehab, and a hospital-based medical and surgical specialty practice space. We will continue to offer the following services: Primary Care, General Medicine, Gynecological Surgery, Urology, Cardiology & Intensive Cardiac Rehab, Orthopedics, Minimally Invasive General Surgery, Bariatric Surgery and Oncology.

Our new location will offer even better care with more space, newer technology and a safer, more modern environment. Adding inpatient care to our Brighton location provides opportunities to integrate services on one campus designed to meet the changing needs of our community. A new, state-of-the-art hospital in Livingston County will enhance medical services from an easily accessible location, delivered by exceptional providers our patients have come to know and trust.

Trinity Health Michigan has signed a purchase agreement with Catholic Healthcare International (CHI) for the sale of its legacy hospital, Trinity Health Livingston, located at 620 Byron Road in Howell, Michigan. The purchase agreement includes ownership transfer of the hospital facility, as well as the nearly 23-acre parcel of land on which the hospital is built, to CHI. Additionally, the sale includes an agreement in which Trinity Health Michigan will rent from CHI a small space within the facility where it will continue to offer yet-to-be-determined medical services to the Howell community.

Hospital Services

The services currently offered at Trinity Health Livingston will continue to be offered at the new hospital campus. As of right now, the only new service that will be added in the new hospital is cardiac CT. However, Trinity Health Livingston continues to operate very full, and our market share is growing. We continue to evaluate services and will look at options as demonstrated by needs in the community.

The services you already trust will be available with added improvements in comfort, safety and technology. New equipment will add to the safety of our patients and efficiency for our colleagues. Our old hospital did not have a tube system for carrying lab specimens or patient lifts in every room. In addition, we are adding a cardiac CT for advanced imaging capabilities to detect plaque around the heart, important for early heart attack assessment. The new hospital will also offer women the following upgrades:

  • Two on-site Radiologists specializing in breast imaging -- versus one currently.
  • Three mammography rooms with the option of adding a fourth if needed -- versus two currently.
  • Two centralized ultrasound units -- versus two separated ultrasound units currently.
  • A larger bone density exam room to accommodate for greater patient comfort and wheelchair accessibility.
  • More seating space at check in and for patients gowned and waiting for imaging.

Emergency services will remain available. Ambulances are fully prepared for the new location, and our emergency will be open 24/7.

Trinity Health remains committed to the Howell community. We have primary care offices in Howell through the Trinity Health IHA Medical Group and in several other Livingston County cities. In addition, Trinity Health will continue to offer urgent care, lab, sleep lab, physical therapy and more in Howell. For emergency and other services, the new hospital is ten minutes away.

The admission criteria will not change. However, we have the capacity to care for a higher number of critical care patients, allowing those patients to be cared for at Trinity Health Livingston and not be transferred

We expect to see the same patient population as we are currently caring for.

In early 2025, Trinity Health Livingston opened an Adolescent Mental Health Intensive Outpatient Program to provide additional support to adolescents in the community. We are actively exploring mental health needs and how Trinity Health can support mental health in our community.

While the goal was to bring back the birthing center, after a great deal of research and consideration, plans for the new hospital no longer include one. Since 2010, the need for a birthing unit has changed. Birthing rates are on the decline across the country and the number of births in the county is not at a level that can support a fully staffed 24/7 birthing unit.

It’s important to remember that one of the reasons the birthing unit closed in 2010 was because 2 out of 3 local mothers chose to deliver their babies outside of Livingston County, including many at our Trinity Health Ann Arbor hospital. This led to many days in which our Livingston birthing unit delivered one or no babies at all.

Though delivery won't take place in Livingston County, we have invested heavily into making all other pre and post delivery services available within our new hospital. When pregnant mothers are ready to deliver, our birthing center at nearby Trinity Health Ann Arbor has all the resources available for a safe and high-quality birthing experience. This facility offers spacious private rooms, a nationally recognized NICU and expert staff with significant training and experience. With more than 4,000 births annually, this birthing center can ensure that Livingston County mothers have access to the most advanced delivery care possible.

Trinity Health Michigan offers robust women’s health services in Livingston County. Outpatient and women’s health services in Livingston County have benefited significantly from an influx of excellent OB/GYNs along with a wide range of other providers to ensure patients have a robust selection of local outpatient care options. In recent years, Trinity Health IHA Medical Group has opened new medical centers in South Lyon, Howell, Brighton and Pinckney providing a range of primary care, urgent care and specialty services. The new hospital will continue to expand access to women’s health services in Livingston County.

Colleague and Staffing Impact

Our new hospital, located eight miles away, will have the same care team you know and love from the existing hospital and Brighton Medical Center. In the new space, you’ll have access to all the same services in a more modern and comfortable space.

We do not anticipate any position eliminations at this point. Our leaders are looking at staffing models against anticipated volume to determine what future staffing models will need to be.

We have never had any discussions about requiring current employees to apply for positions at the new hospital. We will also not prioritize colleagues already working in Brighton. At both Trinity Health Livingston and Trinity Health Medical Center – Brighton, volumes are high and we are often holding inpatients in our Emergency Departments. With these current volumes, and the growth we continue to expect, we expect to open the new hospital quite full. This will require adequate staffing. We will continue to evaluate staffing as we do now and ensure we are ready to open the new hospital.
