Your Guide to Admission, What to Expect, and How to Prepare

Chelsea Hospital’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit offers comprehensive, personalized care to help you regain strength, function, and independence. Below are answers to frequently asked questions to guide you through the referral and recovery process.

  • Medical necessity for daily supervision by a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Physician
  • Reasonable and obtainable functional goals that require at least three hours of therapy, five days per week
  • Need for 24-hour nursing care
  • Requirement for two therapy disciplines, with ability and willingness to actively participate

A referral must be submitted by the sending facility and should include:

  • Face sheet with updated insurance information
  • History and physical
  • Initial consult note and most recent progress note
  • Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation consult
  • Therapy evaluations and notes within 48 hours
  • Current medication list
  • Lab test results
  • Current vital signs

Yes. All patients receive private rooms with:

  • Personal bathrooms
  • Sleeper chairs for guests
  • Views of the wooded hospital grounds

We suggest packing:

  • Hearing aids and batteries
  • Eyeglasses
  • Comfortable pants and shirts
  • Pajamas
  • Rubber-soled, laced shoes
  • Socks and undergarments
  • Personal hygiene items (optional – we provide all essentials)
  • Assistive devices (walker, cane, braces)
  • Books or other personal activities
  • Phone/tablet and chargers

Note: You do not need to bring medications unless directed.

Length of stay depends on diagnosis, functional status, and insurance. Most patients stay 14–21 days.

The unit includes 40 inpatient rehabilitation beds. Availability changes daily; referrals are reviewed promptly, and we strive to accommodate all appropriate patients.

Our admissions team works with your insurance to obtain authorization and verify coverage. If additional authorizations are needed during your stay, we will handle the process and keep you informed.

Yes. One adult guest is allowed to stay overnight in the room.

Pet visits may be approved on a case-by-case basis. Talk with your care team about arranging a visit or outdoor meeting if weather allows.
